Team Freedom Cares Employee Spotlight: Chad R., Video Production

Team Freedom Cares is the philanthropic arm of Freedom Mortgage. Their mission is to help the Freedom family make a difference in their communities. In this week's Team Freedom Cares Employee Spotlight, we're featuring Chad R. and highlighting the creative ways in which he gives back.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Chad started his career as a graphic designer at 18. At 28, he quit his job and sold his house to go back to school full time – originally to become a chef! – but changed his career path toward video production given its relation to graphic design. "Graduating in 2007, I worked for the U.S. Army," Chad said. "I shot military training videos for a year and a half, then was hired as a producer to create broadcast commercials for CBS Television and the CW Philly." Now he resides in Warminster, PA, as a Freedom Mortgage Video Production Manager. With a career spanning 16 years, he is no stranger to media – and that passion has translated to the charitable efforts of the 501st Legion.

What is the 501st Legion? According to Chad, "The 501st Legion is a worldwide group of community-minded volunteers who, through portraying the Dark Side characters of the Star Wars films and other media, participate in, and spearhead public service initiatives, charity events, children's hospital visits, promotional appearances, and public gatherings to benefit the community." The 501st has also been a part of charity walks (e.g., Autism Speaks, Fallen Officers, etc.), Make-A-Wish Foundation events, parades, concerts, professional sporting events – anywhere that may need a helping hand. Chad was recently a part of the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, America's oldest Thanksgiving parade!

Chad creates his 501st costumes by scratch with resin, ABS plastic, fiberglass, and more. Sometimes vendors are available to make these costume kits, but custom outfits require templates, trimming, sanding, assembly, and fitting – with many pieces! His favorite? "Currently, I have four [costumes], but it's a toss-up between both my Mandalorian armor (I have two) and my Scout Trooper."

Interested in getting involved with the 501st Legion? You can go to to find your local garrison. In the United States, garrisons are separated by state. (For example, Pennsylvania is called Garrison Carida).
