Team Freedom Cares Employee Spotlight: Brian Reyes
Team Freedom Cares is the philanthropic arm of Freedom Mortgage. Their mission is to help the Freedom family make a difference in their communities. In this week's Team Freedom Cares Employee Spotlight, we're featuring Brian Reyes.
Brian has been with Freedom Mortgage for over four years, leading Correspondent Change Management and working on IT Project Management. Originally from Riverside, California, Brian joined the Army right out of high school and served for four years. “All but six months of that time was spent in Oklahoma, not exactly where I was hoping to be stationed,” he told us. “I was hoping to go to Europe or see the world, however, I did get to spend six months at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”
Serving in the Army was a great honor, but the best thing to come out of his time was meeting his husband, Robert. “We were in the same unit during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era when going to a gay bar risked getting arrested. I am grateful we didn’t experience anything negative during that time.” Once he was done serving, he stayed in Oklahoma while waiting for Robert to complete his service. Brian and his husband have been together for 25 years.
Because of his Army background, Brian joined Project Hero in the summer of 2016, a cycling organization that uses cycling as an alternative to medication. “I have participated on rides with veterans and first responders who have lost limbs or, due to a traumatic brain injury, have balance issues. Project Hero works with them to get them the bike fitted to allow them to go on bike rides for hundreds of miles. Personally, cycling has been a life-changing activity for me, and it’s taken me to states and countries I wouldn’t have otherwise been privileged to visit.”
Now residing in Jacksonville, Florida, Brian is also heavily involved in the North Florida Bicycle Club and is currently serving his third year as President. Brian has recruited several Freedom Mortgage employees in events involving over 700 riders and over 100 volunteers.
Project Hero has daily and weekly rides happening all over the country. If you are interested in joining, visit weareprojecthero.org or get in touch with Brian to speak with your local Project Hero HUB.
