Mentorship in the First Flyer Program with Jeremy S.

This week, we’re pleased to introduce you to Jeremy S., a Loan Advisor at Freedom Mortgage and a graduate of the First Flyer program. In this article, Jeremy will dive deep into the top things to talk about with your mentor and how to structure mentor meetings while you are in the First Flyer Program.

“First, I would like to say welcome to the brand-new First Flyer class at Freedom Mortgage! As a former First Flyer, there are plenty of opportunities to learn from others in the program,” said Jeremy. “One of the great programs at Freedom Mortgage is the Mentoring Program. This program exists to help people who are new to the industry get connected with established mortgage professionals so they can grow their careers. I truly believe mentoring is only as effective as the effort you put into it. When I was in the First Flyer program, I took every advantage I could get to learn from my mentor. My mentor had just graduated from the First Flyer program and had so much insight about how to grow and succeed as a Loan Advisor at Freedom Mortgage. In this blog, I’m going to go over a few different tips and tricks to maximize your time with your Mentor so you can take advantage of the great opportunities that come with being a mentee.”

Make your meetings intentional. Spend time thinking about what you would ask your future self a year from now. If you do not have a clear direction about where you would like to be, your mentor can help you figure it out. “I got into the mortgage business to do purchase transactions. I joined at the height of the streamline environment, and it’s safe to say I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the opportunity. I spoke with my mentor and asked him how I could come up with action steps to someday get into the Purchase Team. Fast forward to a year later, and I am doing purchases. I love every minute of the day!”

Come prepared with questions. “As a Loan Advisor, you will be asked questions thousands of times throughout the year. At Freedom Mortgage, the best Loan Advisors I know are ones who never stop asking questions. The biggest downfall to your career could be when you think you know everything. The financial industry is a living, breathing ecosystem and without curiosity to learn where it is going, you could find yourself struggling to perform. Mentors can offer great advice about where they believe markets are heading, what they hear daily from clients, and important lessons they have learned throughout the numerous loans they have written. If you do not ask questions, you will not learn, and you will not be able to adapt to new market environments. The best advice I ever received from my mentor was ‘be willing to be a sponge.’ I’ve got that written on a sticky note on my desk, and it’s a daily reminder that there is always more information to learn and others around you can help you do it.”

Utilize your mentor’s business network. “Many of the Mentors at Freedom Mortgage have been in the business for quite a long time. These mentors have spent countless time on sales teams and have access to the best and brightest minds in the company. Do not hesitate to ask your mentor if they would be willing to introduce you to the people who can further your career. I would have never made the connections I have without first asking my mentor for help. My mentor told me that if I was able to succeed on the sales floor, he would introduce me to everyone I would need to know. I worked my absolute hardest and eventually found myself in the top campaign in the company. Upon doing so, the doors opened for me to make moves in my career that brought me to where I am today.”

“In conclusion, the mentoring program has some extreme benefits, but it’s only the effort you put in that will bring success,” Jeremey told us. “My mentor showed me every trick in the book. However, if I did not apply what I learned and was not intentional in my meetings with him, I would not have become a successful Loan Advisor in this market. Shoutout to William (Billy) S.—greatest mentor ever!”
